Paint Correction and Detailing

Here at Unique Detail, we have been offering our Paint Correction and Detailing services to clients throughout  Hertfordshire Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire for over 15 years.

We offer three levels of paint correction depending on the condition of your paintwork

Paintwork correction can sometimes involve 2-5 stages of polishing:

From removing the defects and levelling the paint, to refinement using fine polishes to add gloss, depth and clarity to the finish.

Once the paintwork is refined a, protection stage is involved using a wax, sealant or coating to form a protective barrier against the elements.

The above procedures are time consuming and require high levels of concentration which takes many years to perfect.

Most correctional details take place over 4-5 days, some requiring longer periods dependant on condition.

No two cars are ever the same, and each vehicle is judged upon it’s own merits.

So in most cases and where possible, the vehicle is often required for an assessment prior to the booking to advise what can be achieved.

This way we can give an accurate quote by seeing what level of work is necessary, all of which is non obligational.

If the vehicle cannot be conveniently assessed beforehand, we will require an honest description of the vehicle’s condition.

This enables us to price accordingly, and allow adequate time to complete the work.

Our Full Correction Detail services correct major paint defects/marks, and restore cars of all ages to – in most cases – better than showroom condition.

What is Paint Correction?

Also known as “swirl mark removal” or “machine polishing”, paintwork correction is the reduction or removal of marks in the top layer of paint to produce a more refined finish.

Paint correction can involve either the hand or machine application of varying grades of cleanser, polish or compound.

The majority of work is usually done with various machine polishers to get the best level of correction.

Good paint correction requires a high degree of skill and concentration, but done properly, it really can transform the look of a car by dealing with (amongst other things);poor washing techniques (local hand car washes) hard water marks, etching caused by bird muck or fly squash, swirl marks, scratches and fading.

Paint correction is a term that is now commonly used by both professional car detailers to describe the process of restoring and rejuvenating the paintwork of a vehicle, mostly through the elimination of surface imperfections, that dull, oxidize, or haze the surface by reflecting light off in various directions, therefore detracting from a true and proper, clean, sharp, reflection. These imperfections include things like swirl marks & fine scratches, bird dropping etching & acid rain etching, hologramming & buffer trails, and random isolated deep scratches (or RIDS).

The term paint correction should only really be used if these imperfections are properly removed and are not just merely covered up or hidden with filler based products. The actual corrective process itself comprises of a small amount of clear coat or paint being removed from the surface with the use of abrasive polishes, which are applied and worked in with appropriate polishing machines, in order to level out the surface.

Before any paint correction is undertaken, a thorough wash and decontamination of the vehicle is performed. Paintwork is properly washed and cleaned to remove any loose dirt and debris, then after the wash process the vehicle is clayed with a specialist automotive clay bar, which safely removes any bonded surface contaminants such as tar spots and industrial fallout.

In conclusion, paint correction is the process of removing surface scratches and imperfections from a vehicles paintwork, which involves the use of machine polishers and a range of different polish products. A fully corrected vehicle when viewed in direct sunlight will show only true reflections and no swirl marks, scratches or blemishes will be visible to the naked eye.

Lastly, it is important to distinguish between paintwork that has been truly corrected and paintwork that has been treated with products that are designed to mask and fill surface imperfections such as an all in one polish for example. This should not be referred to as paint correction even if no scratches or blemishes are apparent, because they have not been genuinely removed and are still present under the products fillers, which in time, will wash away and reveal them once more.

Stage 2 Paint Correction

For older cars, or those with with more severe “heavy swirls” paint defects or oxidisation the Stage 2 detail will make a huge difference to the overall finish.

In most cases, it will leave your paintwork in “as new” condition.

Our Stage 2 correction detail is designed for vehicles with ‘medium’ level paint defects.

Poor hand washing techniques and automated car washes will leave your car covered in swirl marks and scratches, which result in a dull looking finish and reduced depth of colour.

Other defects that can be removed with this process are light tree scratches, acid rain etchings, ‘buffer trails / holograms’ left by body shops or incompetent detailers, and bird dropping stains.

With dark coloured vehicles the more noticeable these defects will be.

The Stage 2 correction process consists of two stages: firstly, a heavy stage abrasive machine polishing stage removes a very fine layer of the clearcoat, and the surface defects along with it.

However, this stage leaves its own very fine, hazy marring behind.

The Second, we use a much more gentle machine polishing process to carry out a refining stage – which brings the car up to the exceptional gloss you’d expect which will surpass that of a new car finish.

Unique Detail vs 67K Passat

The video below is of a completed 2013 VW Passat.

This car underwent an extensive decontamination process due to industrial fallout from an oil based paint.

It was completely removed by various methods without damaging the paintwork.

The car then received a stage 2 detail to eliminate all swirls, and deeper scratches and marks that the vehicle had picked up through its 67k mile life time.

Once complete, the car then received its 2 + year protection in the form of Siramik APT Glasscoat.
